UK soldier killed in Afghanistan | ||
The soldier died after being injured in an attack on his patrol base north-east of Sangin in Helmand province. He was flown by helicopter for treatment at the medical centre at Camp Bastion, but later died. Five others were also injured in the incident. The dead soldier's next of kin have been informed. The serviceman was killed after the base came under attack from small arms fire, rocket propelled grenades and indirect fire on Saturday. His death brings the total number of UK troops killed while on operations in Afghanistan since 2001 to 70. 'Ferocious' Private Tony Rawson, 27, from the same battalion, was killed on Friday during a routine patrol in the area of Jusyalay, north east of Sangin, after coming under fire from Taleban fighters. Lieutenant Colonel Charlie Mayo, who is in Helmand, said Saturday's attack had been "on a patrol base that we have to the north east of the town of Sangan, just on the edge of the green zone or the cultivated zone as we call it. "It was quite a ferocious attack and during it unfortunately six of our soldiers were injured and sadly one of the soldiers unfortunately died from his wounds." | ||
